Study Guide for Semester Exam – Wednesday, December 16, 2015
Your child will taking an assessment over reading skills that have been taught this semester. The test includes passages with questions over the following concepts:
Plot elements
Explain the influence of the setting on plot development
Character analysis
Analyze the development of the plot through the internal and external responses of the characters, including their motivations and conflicts
Point of view
Analyze different forms of point of view, including first-person, third-person omniscient, and third-person limited
Theme/ Author’s purpose
Explain the difference between the theme of a literary work and the author’s purpose in an expository text
Dictionary skills
Use a dictionary, a glossary, or a thesaurus to determine the meanings, syllabication, pronunciations, alternate word choices, and parts of speech of words
Vocabulary
Use context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words
Inferencing
Make inferences and draw conclusions about the structure and elements of fiction and provide evidence from text
Media Influences
Evaluate various ways media influences and informs audiences; interpret both explicit and implicit messages in various forms of media
Summarization
Evaluate a summary of the original text for accuracy of the main ideas; distinguish factual claims from commonplace assertions and opinions; use different organizational patterns as guides for summarization
Persuasive Text
Analyze the central argument in speeches; identify the different types of evidence used to support the argument; identify rhetorical fallacies in persuasive texts
